Feminism is recognizing
people’s privileges and oppression to make everyone have equal opportunity. It
comes in the form of social movements, political movements and ideologies. Feminism
has orginated from white woman fighting for the right to autonomy and civil
liberties. Feminism has transformed to be more accepting of different
back grounds. Feminism is always changing to fit the needs of our society. We are currently in the third wave of feminism.
There
are many different types of feminists that hold different views. This means
that not all feminists think alike and agree on all social or political issues.
Different feminists have different methods to bring on social change as well. Chimamanda
Ngozi Adichie describes feminism as “a man or a woman who says, yes, there’s a
problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it, we must do better. All
of us, women and men, must do better” (Adichie, 2014). Despite the differences
between feminists, there is an overarching theme that feminists are people who
see a problem with gender and oppression within our society.
Intersectionality is used within feminism as a tool to recognize where privilege and oppression lie. In my opinion, intersectionality is the most important part of third wave feminism. In the past feminists have excluded other groups of oppressed people like black or indigenous woman. Third wave feminism is now about seeing all the disadvantages in society and how that effects the individuals experience.
